Prek/Preschool

"You can't just scream you have to use your words. That's what we're doing here, we're learning to use our words." -River

The season is changing! It is getting colder and the ground is getting mushy! I just want to take this time to inform you that we DO go outside as long as the weather is not severe. So please send warm clothing and appropriate shoes (rain or snow boots.) Also some of my friends already have chapped little hands so please send gloves/mittens and hats to keep their heads warm. Sometimes its easy to forget these things so if you'd like to keep an extra set here at school you are more than welcome. We think its important to give our friends as much outside time as possible to release some energy and explore how the changing seasons effect our environment!

We are having lots of fun in the classroom as well. We have a new baby friend downstairs 2 month old Julia. Our friends were so interested in this little person we talked about what babies need and how we should take care of them. The kids loved going down to visit her. They watched her drink from bottles and noticed how small she was compared to them. It sparked stories of their "memories" of babyhood which were fun to listen to. :)

Before I end this I want to remind you that we are closed December 21-25 and will return Monday December 28. Thank you for reading and have a safe holiday season!

Hallloween Field Day AND the Trike-A-Thon!

A good time was had by all the ghouls and bats! Drea Leslie and Hollie worked hard at putting together our best ever Halloween Field Day, including cookie decorating, face painting, tattoos, the pumpkin toss, fishing for pumpkins and of course, lots of fun showing off costumes!

A big thank you to Ginger (Lars' mom), Beth and Charlie (Jaxon's parents), Brandi (Neveah's mom), Sherrie and Diana (Cordell's mom and grandma), and Hannah (Noah's mom) who contributed to making the morning a success!!!

Also, thanks to parents who contributed healthy snack grapes, carrots, juice and popcorn, and of course thanks also to the parents who shared strawberry cake, and cookies for our homemade treats!

Finally, thanks to all the families who collected donations in support of St. Jude - this year we collected $300 dollars in the Trike-A-Thon campaign! After two rain delays, everyone had fun trike-a-thoning in in their costumes.

Preschool Wednesday

Hello!! We are very excited about our new curriculum here at Sycamore Run. For the month of September we are focusing on ourselves and getting to know our classroom. I have a very small group of girls who have all transitioned from the downstairs toddler room. They are exploring the classroom and enjoying all the activities the "big kids"partake in. Some of our projects have consisted of self portraits, heigth measurement, and letters falling from the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree. Along with our curriculum we also have other jobs like composting and recycling :). the girls were especially interested in the worm composting and how the worms actually make soil! by the time SPRING arrives we will have beautiful rich soil for our gardens. Thanks, Hollie

Infant/Toddler Tuesday

INFANTS
The tiny infant class has been enjoying the last days of summer, playing outside and enjoying the one-on-one time with teachers. Hailee has been accepted into the nursing program at Hocking College, and so she will transition out of the baby room as of the end of September. James and Chelsea will continue to be the infant teachers four days a week, with Megan or Judy filling in the fifth day and as needed.
Welcome Anna to the infant room!

TODDLERS
Hello friends! We have begun a fantastic school year.
We have started a new curriculum!
On Mondays we are sharing the responsibility of cleaning the classroom, on Tuesdays we will begin worm composting (this is coming soon, until then we are doing are compost outside in the large composting area.) Wednesdays are sorting and taking recycling, Thursdays are show and tell and Fridays are also composting.
Every day also corresponds to a subject area for learning. Monday starts with science, math on Tuesday, literature on Wednesdays, art on Thursdays and history finishes off the week on Friday.
This month we are focusing on self awareness. I ask that on Thursday Sept. 24th that each child bring one thing that represents themselves for show and tell.
Everyday we have outside play, meeting and project. This new curriculum is really helping the kids in every different aspect of school and learning. My toddlers are super excited about the awesome new floor and new classroom set up. Many of my friends are starting to use the potty and even wearing big underwear!
Each week will bring something new and exciting so stay blogging and happy first day of fall Thanks love ya leslie

DIRECTOR MONDAY

Greetings!!

Happy last day of summer, bittersweet tho it may be - fall's my favorite season and I think we're in for a terrific colorful display!

This weekend I was in good company with Drea, Hollie and Leslie - we all attended a full day conference in Marietta, sponsored by COAD. I learned about Infant Physical Development and Credentials for all staff; Hollie and Drea attended the "math toolkit" for ideas and activities; and Leslie completed two focus sessions on Cultural Diversity and Cognitive Development. We all came away feeling like we are really on the cutting edge of early childhood education - Sycamore Run truly is a unique center!

This school year is off to a good (if quiet) start - the building looks so terrific, and the kids are all excited about the new arrangements. We look forward to seeing more new faces coming in the door - tell your friends how happy you are with our services!

*I'm a Pre-K kid!*

These are the words I heard as I walked through the door of Sycamore Run. Three excited boys came up to me talking about being big kids now! I am just as excited about the new year. So many great things have been happening at our school and in our room. New floors, new arrangement, and now a new curriculum. Our first week was full of room exploration, welcoming back new and old friends and writing names on our attendance check in cards. Today we had great fun making faces in the mirror and drawing our first self portrait. Discovering what makes us the same and what is different about us is part of our self awareness month. Please be sure to check them out on our board in the project room.

After that we put our class gerbils Barack and Dottie in their gerbil balls. They ran around our meeting area and we gave them special treats and were also able to pet them. As they rolled around we talked about how we should treat our special animals with "gentle hands" and
"extra water."

I'd like to take this opportunity inform you that Thursday is our show and tell day. We read a book about show and tell and my friends are very excited about it. I asked that they bring their most special item, something that is their favorite, to share with their friends. Thank you for reading and please let me know if you have any questions. Till next time!
